Canton Network Sets Sights on Korean Capital Markets With Meritz Securities Deal

Wall Street’s blockchain ambitions are finding another foothold in Asia. On Thursday, Oct. 15, the Canton Foundation announced a partnership with South Korea’s Meritz Securities. The release disclosed to Bitcoin.com’s newsdesk details that the goal is to explore tokenizing traditional financial assets and connecting them with international markets.

The arrangement also opens the door to using digital representations of high-quality debt instruments as collateral across borders. It’s an ambitious proposition, particularly in a market where evolving securities regulations will determine just how far the two organizations can take their plans.

From Korean Securities to Global Collateral

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishes three areas of cooperation, beginning with converting domestic financial assets into blockchain-based tokens under Korea’s developing regulatory framework. The partners will also examine Canton’s privacy-enabled infrastructure for institutional financial transactions and investigate cross-border applications involving tokenized sovereign-grade debt.

That last component carries particular financial significance. High-quality liquid assets, including certain government securities, are widely used as collateral in traditional finance (TradFi). Tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), the foundation noted, offers a potential mechanism for transferring and coordinating those assets across participating financial platforms. However, the announcement describes exploratory initiatives rather than completed transactions or operational products.

Canton Adds Another Institutional Partner

Developed by Digital Asset, Canton operates as a public blockchain designed to accommodate institutional privacy requirements. Its broader ecosystem reportedly includes more than 1,000 institutions, with 62 major organizations serving as Super Validators.

Meritz Securities brings substantial financial backing to the arrangement. The South Korean investment firm reported 8.35 trillion won in standalone shareholders’ equity as of June 2026, ranking fourth domestically by that measure. The TradFi firm was founded in 1973, and today it commands around KRW 65-73 trillion, which is equivalent to $48.3 to $54.3 billion.

“Our collaboration with the Canton Foundation lays the groundwork for exploring how Korea’s capital markets can be linked with global digital asset infrastructure,” said Byungha Kang, managing director of Meritz Securities’ Strategic Planning Unit.

The announcement follows Tuesday’s disclosure involving S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko, Derivnex, DRW, and Marex, which completed a privately negotiated total return swap on Canton using a tokenized benchmark.

Unlike that executed transaction, the Meritz agreement outlines potential applications awaiting further development. Its practical reach will depend heavily on Korea’s regulatory decisions and whether institutional participants eventually put the proposed infrastructure to work.
